634 I wanted to add a Roman Catholic version of the Holy Bible to my Kindle library. I chose the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) because I had used an earlier edition of it when I was a member of the Catholic church. It turns out my choice was not a satisfactory one. This Bible has significant issues, both with regards to content and layout.First the content. The Bible text itself, which has undergone several revisions since the original New American Bible (NAB) was first published in 1970, is okay, although it does in many areas reflect Catholic dogma (mainly from the paragraph headers). Later revisions of the NABRE attempted to neutralize this, making it fall more in line with other non-Catholic translations. I'm not sure how effective the later translators were in accomplishing their task. In the latest (2011) edition, the translators seem to have committed themselves to full-blown gender-neutral language, which I find quite distracting. It's important to note that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has not approved the NABRE for liturgical use in the United States, but only for "private use and study."The Bible text may have some issues, but those problems pale in comparison to the accompanying notes and annotations. These appear to be unchanged from the 1970 edition of the NAB. Put simply, they are abysmal. They have such an ultra-liberal theological bias that, in many cases, the actually caused me to question the veracity of the Bible! For example, according to the translators, Moses didn't write the first five books of the Old Testament (or only wrote parts of them); Daniel didn't write Daniel; and the Gospels, instead of being written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, were penned over the course of the first century by various authors. For me, the questions became: is the Bible the inspired, inerrant Word of God or not? The NABRE certainly calls this into question.The layout of the Kindle version of the NABRE is not particularly conducive to ease of reading. The Bible text is littered with superscript references to the notes (all are clickable links.) The notes for each chapter appear at the end of each chapter, but it's nearly impossible to see at first glance where the text ends and the notes begin.I am not at all enamored of the Kindle version of the NABRE. It is not an edition I use with any frequency. I will continue looking for a better Catholic Bible to add to my Kindle library.
